About RMHR

Rocky Mountain Horse Rescue (RMHR) was founded in 2004 by Eugenia “Bini” Abbott in Arvada, CO. Bini, a resident of Colorado for 60 years, has been actively involved in horse rescue since the age of fourteen. She helped rescue horses with Colorado Horse Rescue throughout the 80s and 90s and co-founded the Horse Protection League (HPL) in 1994 in Arvada prior to starting RMHR. RMHR is dedicated to the rescue, welfare, and care of Horses, Ponies, Mules, and Donkeys. We are a 501(c)(3) organization and were 100% volunteer through January of 2019 when an injury to Bini required us to hire some part time help.

In 2004 we identified an immediate need to rescue horses that had been impounded. Since then we have been contacted by families facing financial difficulties, moves, deaths and other crisis situations that forced them to part with their animals. We’ve learned that a rescue means more than putting weight back on. It means rehabilitating a horse so that its adoptable. It involves educating individuals and groups on animal welfare. We give advice and counsel to daily callers. When we can’t take a horse we can direct them to other solutions. We provide a lifetime commitment to the animals we take in and are the forever home for those that we cannot place. Over time we learned that rescues sometimes require equipment. Our slings and lifts have been used as far away as Alaska and as nearby as a local swimming pool.

Who is RMHR?

Who Rocky Mountain Horse Rescue is can best be summarized by this video clip of Bini being recognized as a 7 Everyday Hero in 2014.

  • Bini is amazing and all of volunteers and people there work so hard to take care of the animals there and find them loving homes!

    Jennifer
  • Amazing folks who work very hard to make a difference in the lives of the horses who need their help to find their forever home.

  • I was stranded in Wheat Ridge with a broken down truck that came with NO timeline on repair, had a horse in a trailer, and had to make it home to Wisconsin. Kris brought her truck and picked up my horse in the trailer and saved us from the heat and the exhaust of the semis in the truck stop parking lot we were stuck at. Awesome people. Couldn’t have been more blessed in a time of need!

  • Our relationship with RMHR and Bini Abbott came about due to an animal cruelty investigation that resulted in the impoundment of ten horses due to severe neglect. One of them, a sorrel Quarter horse stallion was very near death. RMHR provided around the clock care. A month later I returned to evaluate the horse’s progress. I was stunned! I had to reassure myself this was the same animal by examining its distinct characteristics. The animal is now in prime condition. Ms. Abbott and Rocky Mountain Horse Rescue has significantly contributed to our organization and  had a tremendous impact on our community.

  • I am the Animal Control officer for the Elbert County Sheriff’s office. While I’ve know Bini Abbott for a short time she’s made a big impact on me with her knowledge of animals. I refer people that I come in contact with in the field that do not have a lot of experience with horses. Bini helps them. She is caring for Bullett a horse who was involved in a cruelty investigation. Bullett came to Bini very thin and malnourished. Now he’s full of life and gaining weight. I really believe Bini has her heart in this program.
